Install eSIM on iPhone XS / XS Max / XR
Compatible when the phone has an EID, is updated enough to expose eSIM settings, and is unlocked. Treat any missing EID or Add Cellular Plan option as a no-go until confirmed. You need your QR code (emailed after purchase) and an internet connection to scan it.

Exact settings path
Settings > Cellular (or Mobile Data) > Add Cellular Plan

Settings → Cellular
Go to Settings → Cellular (or Mobile Data). Tap 'Add Cellular Plan'. Scan the QR code when the camera opens.

Add and confirm
Tap 'Add Cellular Plan' when prompted. The eSIM installs. You can label it for easy identification.

Enable when abroad
At your destination, follow the plan terms, then go to Settings → Cellular, select the travel plan, and turn it on for data when you are ready to use it. Keep your primary line for calls and texts if needed, subject to your carrier's terms and charges.
Check compatibility first
The iPhone XS, XS Max, and XR are among the earliest iPhones with eSIM. Check for an EID, update iOS, and confirm the phone is unlocked before purchasing a travel plan.
Carrier and region: Older iPhones and imported/refurbished units are more likely to have regional or carrier differences. An eSIM-capable model name is not enough; verify the phone's EID and unlock status.
Before you fly
Install on a reliable Wi-Fi connection and make sure the QR code is not being displayed on the same phone you are trying to scan. Open the email on another screen if needed.
Install vs. activate: Install on reliable Wi-Fi before departure. Keep the QR code on another screen and leave the travel line off until arrival if you want a clean separation between setup and travel use.
Device details cross-check: Apple: unlock and eSIM checks. Regional model and carrier support can still differ.
Home line and dual SIM
The usual setup is a Canadian physical SIM plus Voyaio eSIM. Keep the Canadian line for calls and SMS, choose Voyaio for data, and disable Canadian data roaming. Keeping the Canadian line enabled can still incur your carrier's roaming or usage charges, especially for calls and SMS; check your carrier's terms before travel.
When you arrive
Select the travel plan for cellular data after landing and disable data roaming for your Canadian line. Older iPhones may take a moment to register on a local network.

The older iPhone will not install the profile
Update iOS, connect to Wi-Fi, confirm an EID exists, and scan from another screen. If Add Cellular Plan is absent, stop and verify the regional model.
The plan is installed but the phone remains offline
Select Voyaio for Cellular Data, enable the line and any required data roaming, then restart. Older hardware can take longer to register after the first network connection.
If the phone shows no service, confirm the travel plan is enabled, mobile data is assigned to that line, and data roaming is enabled for the travel eSIM when the provider requires it. Then toggle airplane mode or restart the phone.

No. The XR family supports eSIM in supported regional configurations, but check the exact device for EID, Add Cellular Plan, and No SIM restrictions.
Can I scan the QR code from the same iPhone?
