eSIM vs. a physical SIM

A physical SIM is a removable card. An eSIM is a secure profile built into the phone that can be downloaded from a carrier or travel provider. With a travel eSIM, you can add a second data plan without removing your Canadian SIM or visiting a shop after you land.

The phone still needs to support eSIM and be unlocked. An eSIM also does not automatically include a new phone number or voice service: many travel plans are data-only, so calls and messages usually continue through your existing number or apps such as WhatsApp and iMessage.

What to check before buying
