How much travel data do you need?

A light-use trip with messaging, occasional maps, email, and web browsing may use about 3โ€“7 GB per week. Daily navigation, social media, photo uploads, and ride-hailing often push a trip closer to 7โ€“14 GB per week. Streaming video, frequent video calls, and hotspot use can require substantially more.

What can change your estimate?

Automatic photo backups, app updates, hotspot use, and high-resolution video are common sources of unexpected data use. Download offline maps, update apps before leaving Canada, and use hotel or cafรฉ Wi-Fi for large files.

Choosing a plan after the calculation

The calculator rounds your recommendation to a supported plan size. If you are travelling across several countries, check a regional destination page; if you are staying in one country, compare that country eSIM instead. You can also read our travel data guide for practical examples.

How this estimate is calculated

We start with an approximate 0.3 GB per day for email, web browsing, and messaging, then add planning allowances for the activity levels you select. We multiply that daily estimate by your trip length and show a range about 20% below and above it. The suggested data amount adds a 15% buffer, then rounds up to the next data size available in Voyaio's plans. These are planning assumptions, not a measurement of your device or a guarantee of usage. App settings, video quality, background activity, signal conditions, and hotspot use can change your actual data consumption. If you know how much data you used on a similar trip, use that as a useful comparison.
