How to Install a Travel eSIM in 5 Minutes: iPhone and Android Guide

You bought a travel eSIM. Now what?

The good news is that installing an eSIM is usually simple. In most cases, you only need your phone, a Wi-Fi connection, and the QR code or activation details sent to your email. Once installed, your travel eSIM sits in your phone's cellular settings until you are ready to use it.

For Canadian travellers, the best time to install a travel eSIM is usually before you leave home. That way, you are not trying to set it up at the airport, on weak Wi-Fi, or after a long flight. You can install it on your phone in advance, label it clearly, and turn it on when you arrive at your destination.

This guide walks through what you need, how to install a travel eSIM on iPhone and Android, how to activate it when you land, and what to check if something does not work right away.

If you want device-specific steps, use the dedicated guides for setting up a travel eSIM on iPhone or setting up a travel eSIM on Samsung and Android. If the eSIM is already installed but data is not working, jump to the travel eSIM troubleshooting guide.

Before You Start: What You Need

Before installing your travel eSIM, make sure you have:

• An eSIM-compatible phone
• An unlocked phone
• Your eSIM QR code, activation link, or manual activation details
• A stable Wi-Fi or cellular connection
• Your Voyaio order email
• A few minutes to complete setup

Your phone must be unlocked because a locked phone may only work with the carrier that sold it. If your phone is still locked to a Canadian carrier, the travel eSIM may not activate properly.

You also need internet access to download the eSIM profile. That is why installing at home on Wi-Fi is better than waiting until you arrive.

Should You Install Your eSIM Before You Travel?

Yes, in most cases. Installing before your trip gives you time to make sure the eSIM is on your phone and visible in settings.

There is a difference between installing an eSIM and using it for data. Many travel eSIMs can be installed before you leave, then turned on when you land. However, every plan can have its own activation rules, so always follow the instructions in your order email.

A good setup approach is:

• Buy your travel eSIM before your trip.
• Install it at home while connected to Wi-Fi.
• Label it clearly, such as "USA Travel" or "Europe Travel."
• Keep your regular Canadian line as your default line until travel day.
• When you arrive, turn on the travel eSIM and set it as your cellular data line.

How to Install a Travel eSIM on iPhone

The exact wording may vary slightly depending on your iPhone model and iOS version, but the general process is similar.

Option 1: Install Using a QR Code

• Open the Camera app on your iPhone.
• Point the camera at the eSIM QR code from your order email.
• Tap the notification that appears, such as "Cellular Plan Detected."
• Tap Continue.
• Tap Add Cellular Plan or Add eSIM.
• Follow the on-screen steps.
• Label the plan clearly, such as "Travel eSIM."
• Choose your default lines when prompted.

If you are installing before your trip, keep your regular Canadian line as your default for calls and messages. You can set the travel eSIM as your data line when you arrive.

Option 2: Install from iPhone Settings

If the Camera method does not work:

• Open Settings.
• Tap Cellular or Mobile Data.
• Tap Add eSIM or Add Cellular Plan.
• Choose Use QR Code.
• Scan the QR code from your email.
• Follow the on-screen steps.

Some iPhones also allow you to tap and hold a QR code in an email or browser and choose Add eSIM. If your Voyaio email includes an install link, you may be able to tap it directly from your iPhone to open the setup flow.

Option 3: Manual Installation

If you cannot scan the QR code, use the manual activation details from your order email. This may include an SM-DP+ address and activation code.

On iPhone:

• Go to Settings.
• Tap Cellular or Mobile Data.
• Tap Add eSIM.
• Choose the manual entry option.
• Enter the activation details exactly as provided.
• Follow the prompts to finish installation.

Manual entry is helpful if you only have one device and cannot display the QR code on another screen.

How to Install a Travel eSIM on Android

Android steps vary by brand and software version. Google Pixel and Samsung Galaxy phones are two of the most common eSIM-compatible Android devices, but the general process is similar.

Google Pixel

• Open Settings.
• Tap Network & Internet.
• Tap SIMs.
• Tap Add SIM.
• Choose Set up an eSIM.
• Scan the QR code from your order email.
• Follow the on-screen instructions.
• Name the eSIM clearly, such as "Travel eSIM."

Samsung Galaxy

• Open Settings.
• Tap Connections.
• Tap SIM Manager.
• Tap Add eSIM.
• Choose Scan QR code.
• Scan the QR code from your order email.
• Follow the prompts to add the plan.
• Label it clearly if your phone allows it.

Other Android Phones

On other Android devices, look for settings such as:

• Network & Internet
• Connections
• SIMs
• SIM Manager
• Mobile Network
• Add eSIM
• Download a SIM
• Add Carrier

If you do not see eSIM options, your phone may not support eSIM or your model may not support eSIM in your region.

How to Activate Your eSIM When You Land

After installation, you need to make sure your phone uses the travel eSIM for mobile data.

On iPhone:

• Go to Settings.
• Tap Cellular or Mobile Data.
• Select your travel eSIM.
• Turn on the line if it is off.
• Set Cellular Data to your travel eSIM.
• Keep data roaming on for the travel eSIM if the plan instructions require it.
• Keep data roaming off on your Canadian line if you want to avoid roaming charges.

On Android:

• Open Settings.
• Go to Network & Internet or Connections.
• Open SIM settings or SIM Manager.
• Select your travel eSIM.
• Turn it on.
• Set it as the SIM for mobile data.
• Follow your plan instructions for data roaming.

Some travel eSIMs need data roaming enabled on the travel eSIM line to connect to partner networks. This is different from enabling roaming on your Canadian line. Make sure you are changing the setting for the correct SIM.

How to Avoid Roaming Charges on Your Canadian Line

If you want to avoid accidental roaming from your Canadian carrier, check your settings carefully.

• Set your travel eSIM as the cellular data line.
• Turn off data roaming on your Canadian line.
• Do not use your Canadian line for outgoing calls or texts unless you understand the fees.
• Use apps like WhatsApp, FaceTime, Messenger, or iMessage over data when possible.
• Leave your Canadian line on only if you need to receive texts or calls.

Your exact carrier fees depend on your Canadian mobile plan, so check with your provider before travelling. If you are still comparing where to buy, browse Voyaio travel eSIM destinations before you leave.

Troubleshooting: What If the eSIM Does Not Work?

If your eSIM does not connect right away, do not panic. Try these steps:

Check That You Are in the Destination Country

Some travel eSIMs will not fully connect until you arrive in the covered destination.

Confirm the eSIM Is Turned On

Go into cellular settings and make sure the travel eSIM line is enabled.

Set It as the Data Line

Your phone may still be trying to use your Canadian SIM for data. Set the travel eSIM as the cellular data line.

Check Data Roaming on the Travel eSIM

Some travel eSIMs require roaming to be enabled on the eSIM line. Make sure you are not enabling it on the wrong line.

Restart Your Phone

A restart can help your phone reconnect to the local network.

Manually Select a Network

If automatic network selection does not work, try manually selecting a supported local network in your phone settings.

Check Your APN Settings

Some eSIMs require specific APN settings. Use the details from your installation email if provided.

Contact Support

If the eSIM still does not work, contact support with your order details, destination, device model, and screenshots of your cellular settings if possible.

What to Do After Your Trip

When your trip is over, you can turn off the travel eSIM. If you will not use it again, you can delete it from your phone.

On iPhone, go to Settings, Cellular, select the travel eSIM, and choose the option to delete or remove the plan. On Android, go to SIM settings or SIM Manager, select the eSIM, and remove it.

Do not delete an eSIM during your trip unless you are sure you no longer need it. Some eSIMs cannot be reinstalled after deletion, or may require support to troubleshoot.

Final Thoughts: Installing a Travel eSIM Is Easier Than It Looks

Installing a travel eSIM usually takes only a few minutes, especially if you do it before leaving home. The most important steps are checking compatibility, making sure your phone is unlocked, installing on Wi-Fi, labelling the plan clearly, and setting the eSIM as your data line when you arrive.

Once it is set up, you can travel with mobile data ready for maps, messaging, bookings, ride-share apps, translation, and everything else you need on the go.
