How to Avoid Roaming Charges as a Canadian Traveller

Roaming charges are one of the easiest travel costs to overlook. Flights, hotels, tours, and restaurants are obvious. Phone charges are quieter. They often show up after the trip, when you realize your phone connected abroad more than expected.

For Canadians, avoiding roaming charges starts before you leave. You need to understand your carrier's roaming rules, decide whether you will use a travel eSIM, adjust your phone settings, and avoid accidental data use on your Canadian line.

For a settings-first walkthrough, use the dedicated guide to phone settings that help avoid roaming charges before you travel.

The good news is that you do not need to be disconnected. You can still use maps, messaging, email, rideshare apps, travel apps, and social media. You just need a better setup.

Quick answer

To avoid data roaming on your Canadian line, turn off data roaming for that line and select your travel eSIM for mobile data. This does not, by itself, stop roaming charges for calls, outgoing texts, or voicemail on an active Canadian line. If you want to prevent that line from connecting abroad, turn it off or use airplane mode with Wi-Fi, and check your carrier's rules first.

This setup gives you data access without relying on your Canadian carrier's roaming plan for everyday internet.

Step 1: Check your carrier's roaming rules

Before travelling, log in to your Canadian carrier account and check your roaming options. Look for daily roaming fees, travel passes, pay-per-use rates, eligible destinations, data limits, and rules for calls, texts, voicemail, and Wi-Fi calling.

The billing triggers differ by carrier and plan. Review your carrier's current guidance before departure: Rogers roaming billing, Bell international roaming, or TELUS charges while travelling. Check the rate and coverage for your exact destination and account; general advice cannot confirm which features your plan includes.

Do not assume roaming is off by default. Do not assume your plan includes the destination. Do not assume the U.S. and international rates are the same.

Carrier roaming can be convenient, but the details matter. A quick check before travel can prevent expensive surprises.

Step 2: Decide whether you need your Canadian number

Ask yourself whether you need your Canadian phone number to work normally while you are away.

If you need regular calls, texts, or voicemail, you may still need roaming or a hybrid setup. If you mainly use WhatsApp, iMessage, FaceTime, Messenger, email, and maps, a travel eSIM may be enough.

Many travellers do not need traditional roaming every day. They need data. A travel eSIM solves that problem more directly.

Step 3: Use a travel eSIM for data

A travel eSIM gives your compatible phone mobile data for your destination. You buy it before your trip, install it digitally, and use it for internet access abroad.

With a travel eSIM, you can:

• Navigate with Google Maps or Apple Maps.
• Message through WhatsApp, iMessage, or Messenger.
• Use email and browser apps.
• Order rideshares.
• Access airline and hotel apps.
• Translate signs and menus.
• Use social media.

Because the eSIM is prepaid, it can make costs more predictable than daily roaming.

Step 4: Turn off data roaming on your Canadian line

This is one of the most important settings. If data roaming is on for your Canadian line, your phone may connect to roaming data abroad.

On iPhone, open Settings > Cellular, tap your Canadian line, and turn off Data Roaming. On Android, open your SIM or mobile network settings and turn off roaming for your Canadian SIM.

If your travel eSIM requires data roaming, turn it on only for the travel eSIM line. The goal is not to turn roaming off everywhere. The goal is to prevent your Canadian line from being used for travel data.

Step 5: Select the travel eSIM for cellular data

Installing an eSIM is not enough. You need to choose it as the data line.

On iPhone, go to Settings > Cellular > Cellular Data and select the travel eSIM. On Android, choose the travel eSIM as the preferred SIM for mobile data.

If your phone has automatic data switching, consider turning it off. Automatic switching can sometimes cause your phone to use the wrong line.

Step 6: Use Wi-Fi wisely

Wi-Fi can help you reduce data usage, but it should not be your entire travel plan. Public Wi-Fi may be slow, unsafe, crowded, or unavailable when you need it most.

Use Wi-Fi for heavy activities like:

• App updates.
• Video streaming.
• Photo and video backup.
• Large downloads.
• Long video calls.

Use your travel eSIM for everyday mobility, such as maps, messaging, rideshare, ticket apps, and quick searches.

Step 7: Download offline maps

Offline maps are one of the easiest ways to reduce data usage. Download your destination areas before you leave the hotel or before the trip.

Offline maps can help with basic navigation and orientation, but they may not include live traffic, transit updates, or the newest business information. You still need some data for the best experience.

Step 8: Turn off background data drains

Your phone can use data even when you are not actively using it. Before travelling, check these settings:

• Automatic app updates.
• Cloud photo backup.
• Background app refresh.
• Podcast and music downloads.
• Video autoplay.
• Large email attachments.

Turning these off can help your eSIM data last longer and reduce the chance of accidental roaming use.

Step 9: Be careful with voicemail and Wi-Fi calling

Voicemail, Wi-Fi calling, and regular SMS can have carrier-specific roaming rules. Some travellers assume Wi-Fi calling is always free abroad, but that is not always true depending on the carrier, destination, and number called.

Before using these features, check your carrier's policy. When in doubt, use app-based calling through WhatsApp, FaceTime, Messenger, Teams, or Zoom.

Step 10: Monitor usage during your trip

Check your data usage every day or two. This helps you avoid running out of eSIM data and confirms that your Canadian line is not unexpectedly being used.

On iPhone, check Cellular settings. On Android, check Data Usage under network settings. Many eSIM providers also show usage in their account area or app.

What to do when you land

When you arrive:

Turn off airplane mode.

Turn on the travel eSIM.

Set the travel eSIM as cellular data.

Confirm data roaming is off on your Canadian line.

Enable data roaming on the travel eSIM if required.

Open a browser or map to test the connection.

Keep your Canadian line for essential texts only, if needed.

This arrival checklist prevents many common roaming mistakes.

Final recommendation

To avoid roaming charges, do not rely on hope. Set up your phone intentionally before travel. Use a travel eSIM for data, turn off data roaming on your Canadian line, choose the eSIM as your data line, and use app-based communication whenever possible.

This gives you the practical benefits of staying connected without letting your Canadian roaming fees run the trip.

Frequently asked questions

Should I turn off roaming before travelling?

Turn off data roaming on your Canadian line if you do not want to use carrier roaming. Your travel eSIM may still need roaming enabled on its own line.

Can airplane mode prevent roaming charges?

Airplane mode can prevent cellular connections, but you will not have mobile data unless you turn on Wi-Fi or configure your eSIM properly. It is not the best long-term solution if you need data while exploring.

Can I avoid roaming and still use maps?

Yes. Use a travel eSIM for mobile data and download offline maps to reduce usage.

Will I be charged for receiving texts abroad?

Carrier policies vary. Check your Canadian carrier's roaming rules before relying on SMS.

Is a travel eSIM the same as roaming?

No. Roaming uses your Canadian carrier abroad. A travel eSIM gives you a separate data plan for your destination.
