How to Set Up a Travel eSIM on Samsung or Android
TL;DR
Samsung Galaxy, Google Pixel, and Android travel eSIM setup steps, including SIM Manager, QR codes, and troubleshooting.
Travel eSIM setup on Android is usually simple, but the exact steps can vary by phone brand, Android version, and carrier settings. Samsung Galaxy and Google Pixel devices are the most common examples, but other Android phones may use slightly different names for the same settings.
The basic process is the same: confirm compatibility, buy the right eSIM plan, install it using a QR code or manual details, choose it as the mobile data SIM, and check roaming settings when you arrive.
This guide explains the setup process for Samsung and Android travellers, plus the most common mistakes to avoid.
Before you buy an Android travel eSIM
Before purchasing, check three things:
- Your Android phone supports eSIM.
- Your phone is unlocked.
- Your destination is covered by the plan.
Compatibility is not guaranteed just because your phone is new. Some regional models do not support eSIM. Some carrier versions may have restrictions. Budget phones may use physical SIM only.
To check, open your settings and look for options such as Add eSIM, Add mobile plan, Download a SIM, or SIM Manager.
Samsung Galaxy eSIM setup
On many Samsung Galaxy phones:
- Open Settings > Connections > SIM manager.
- Tap Add eSIM, then Scan QR code.
- Scan the QR code supplied by your eSIM provider and follow the on-screen instructions.
After installation, you should see the new eSIM in SIM Manager. Label it clearly as Travel or Voyaio so you do not confuse it with your Canadian SIM.
Samsung's Canadian Galaxy eSIM guide also covers QR and manual activation. Samsung notes that eSIM support varies by model, country, and carrier.
Google Pixel eSIM setup
On many Google Pixel phones:
- Open Settings > Network & internet > SIMs.
- Tap Add SIM, then Set up an eSIM.
- Follow the activation prompts for your provider. Depending on the plan, this may involve scanning a QR code or entering activation details.
Google's Pixel eSIM setup guide notes that the steps can vary by carrier. Its eSIM compatibility guidance lists Pixel 4 and later as eSIM-compatible, while some older models have carrier or regional exceptions.
Other Android phones
Other Android brands may use different wording. Look for settings like:
- Mobile network.
- SIM cards.
- SIM Manager.
- Add eSIM.
- Download SIM.
- Add mobile plan.
If you cannot find eSIM settings, search inside your phone settings for eSIM. If nothing appears, your phone may not support eSIM or the feature may not be enabled on that model.
Install before you travel
Install your eSIM before leaving Canada if possible. This gives you time to solve any setup issues while you still have stable Wi-Fi.
Keep in mind that installing the eSIM is not always the same as activating the data plan. Some plans begin when they connect to a supported network. Others may begin immediately after installation. Read the plan instructions carefully.
If the plan starts right away, install closer to departure. If it starts on first connection abroad, installing before your trip is usually the better choice.
Choose the eSIM for mobile data
After installing the eSIM, your phone may not automatically use it for data. You need to select it as the preferred data SIM.
On Samsung, go to Settings > Connections > SIM Manager and choose the travel eSIM under Mobile data.
On Pixel, go to Settings > Network & internet > SIMs and choose the travel eSIM for mobile data.
Keep your Canadian SIM available for calls and texts if needed, but make sure mobile data uses the travel eSIM while you are abroad.
Check data roaming settings
Many travel eSIMs require roaming to be turned on for the eSIM line. This is normal. However, you should avoid turning on data roaming for your Canadian line unless you want to use your Canadian carrier's roaming.
Roaming controls vary by Android model. On Pixel, open each SIM's network settings to check its Roaming setting. On Galaxy, Settings > Connections > Mobile networks > Data roaming controls data roaming; confirm how the setting applies to your SIMs on your model before changing it. Keep the travel eSIM selected for mobile data, and turn on roaming only when its plan instructions require it. Google's Pixel network settings and Samsung's Galaxy connection settings describe the options.
Some Galaxy phones have Auto data switching, which can use another SIM for data if the preferred SIM cannot connect. Turn that feature off if you want to prevent the Canadian line from taking over data when the travel eSIM loses service. Samsung notes that features and menus vary by model and software version in its dual-SIM guide.
On some Pixel models, data during a call can use the SIM making the call. If you keep your Canadian line active, check Google's Pixel Dual SIM guidance and your carrier's roaming terms before making or answering calls abroad.
Manual network selection
If your eSIM shows no service or does not connect, try manual network selection.
Open the mobile network settings for the travel eSIM, turn off automatic network selection, and wait for available networks. Choose one of the supported networks listed in your eSIM instructions, if provided.
This can take a few minutes. After selecting a network, restart the phone or toggle airplane mode.
APN settings on Android
Some eSIM plans require an APN setting. APN stands for Access Point Name, and it tells the phone how to connect to the data network.
If your instructions include an APN, enter it exactly. Avoid extra spaces, spelling changes, or capitalization mistakes.
On many Android phones, APN settings are under Mobile Network > Access Point Names. If APN settings are locked or unavailable, contact support.
Common Android eSIM mistakes
Avoid these common issues:
- Assuming every Android phone supports eSIM.
- Buying an eSIM for a locked phone.
- Installing the eSIM on a tablet or wrong device by accident.
- Forgetting to set the eSIM as the mobile data SIM.
- Turning roaming on for the Canadian SIM instead of the travel eSIM.
- Deleting the eSIM before contacting support.
- Forgetting to check APN settings.
Android settings vary, so do not worry if your menu names are slightly different. The goal is the same: install the eSIM, choose it for data, and confirm it can roam on supported networks.
Samsung vs Pixel: what is different?
Samsung usually groups eSIM settings under SIM Manager. Pixel usually groups them under Network & internet. Samsung may use terms like Primary SIM, Preferred SIM, or Mobile data. Pixel may use SIMs and mobile data preferences.
The practical difference is mostly navigation. Once installed, both phones can use a travel eSIM for data while keeping your Canadian SIM available.
Should you remove your Canadian SIM?
Usually no. Most travellers keep their Canadian SIM in the phone and add the travel eSIM digitally. This helps preserve access to your Canadian number for important SMS messages or occasional calls.
Just make sure the Canadian SIM is not being used for mobile data abroad.
Final recommendation
For Android travellers, the best setup is to install the eSIM before departure, label it clearly, select it as the mobile data SIM, and enable roaming only for the eSIM if required. Keep your Canadian SIM available, but avoid using it for data while abroad.
Because Android menus vary, take a few screenshots of your settings before the trip and save the eSIM instructions offline. That way, you can troubleshoot quickly after landing.
