Can I Use an eSIM and Keep My Canadian Phone Number?

Yes. In many cases, Canadian travellers can use a travel eSIM for mobile data and keep their Canadian phone number active at the same time. This is one of the biggest advantages of eSIM technology.

The basic idea is simple. Your Canadian SIM stays in your phone for your regular number. Your travel eSIM is added digitally and used for data while you are abroad. On a compatible dual SIM phone, both lines can sit on the same device, and you choose which line handles mobile data.

This setup is especially useful if you want affordable data for maps, messages, rideshare apps, email, and browsing, but still want access to your Canadian number for important texts or occasional calls.

The important part is setup. If your phone settings are wrong, your Canadian line may still trigger roaming charges. This guide explains how the setup works and what to watch before you travel.

How dual SIM works for travel

Dual SIM means your phone can hold more than one mobile line. Depending on your device, that may be one physical SIM plus one eSIM, or multiple eSIMs with one or more active at a time.

For travel, the most common setup is:

• Canadian SIM: used for your regular phone number.
• Travel eSIM: used for mobile data in your destination.

This lets you keep your regular phone number on the phone without relying on it for travel data. You can label each line, choose your default voice line, and choose your cellular data line.

For most travellers, the travel eSIM should be the cellular data line. That means apps like WhatsApp, iMessage, Google Maps, Uber, Gmail, Safari, Chrome, and FaceTime use the travel eSIM's data instead of your Canadian roaming data.

Will my Canadian number still work?

Your Canadian number can stay active, but what it can do depends on your carrier, phone settings, and roaming rules.

In many cases, you may still be able to receive SMS messages on your Canadian number. This can be helpful for banking codes, two-factor authentication, airline alerts, family messages, and work notifications.

However, using your Canadian number abroad can sometimes trigger roaming charges. Making calls, answering calls, sending SMS, checking voicemail, or using data on the Canadian line may activate roaming, depending on your carrier.

That is why the goal is not just to keep the Canadian line active. The goal is to keep it active in a controlled way.

The safest phone setup

A good setup for many Canadian travellers looks like this:

• Keep your Canadian SIM installed.
• Install your travel eSIM before you leave.
• Set the travel eSIM as your cellular data line.
• Turn off data roaming on your Canadian line.
• Turn on data roaming on the travel eSIM only if the eSIM instructions require it.
• Use app-based messaging and calling whenever possible.
• Avoid answering or placing regular calls on your Canadian number unless you understand the cost.

This setup helps prevent your Canadian plan from being used for data while you are away.

Can I still use iMessage?

Yes, but there are a few details to understand. iMessage can work over mobile data or Wi-Fi, so it can usually work through your travel eSIM data connection.

If your iMessage is connected to your Apple ID email address, it should continue to work through data. If you want iMessage to keep using your Canadian phone number, keep your Canadian line active and avoid removing it from the phone.

Before travelling, open your iPhone settings and check which addresses are enabled under Send & Receive. Make sure your Apple ID email is also enabled, so people can still reach you even if phone-number activation gets temporarily interrupted.

Can I use WhatsApp with my same number?

Yes. WhatsApp is tied to your account, not the SIM that is currently providing data. Once WhatsApp is set up, you can keep using it over your travel eSIM's mobile data.

In most cases, you should not change your WhatsApp number when travelling. Keep your Canadian number attached to the account and simply use the travel eSIM for internet access.

This is one reason travel eSIMs are useful. Your data connection changes, but your app accounts can stay the same.

What about banking verification codes?

This is one of the main reasons travellers want to keep their Canadian number active. Banks, credit cards, government accounts, booking sites, and work tools may send SMS verification codes to your Canadian number.

If you may need codes while travelling, do three things before you leave:

• Confirm your phone can keep your Canadian line active while using the travel eSIM for data.
• Add backup verification methods where possible, such as an authenticator app or email.
• Check your carrier's roaming rules for receiving SMS abroad.

Do not wait until you are locked out of an account at the airport. Make sure important accounts have a backup option before the trip.

Will keeping my Canadian line on always cost money?

Not always, but it depends on the carrier and what you do with the line. Some roaming features activate when you place or answer calls, send texts, use data, or check voicemail. Incoming SMS may be treated differently by some carriers.

Because the rules vary, the safest advice is to treat your Canadian line as a backup while abroad. Keep it available for essential messages, but avoid using it for regular calls, texts, or data unless you are comfortable with the possible charges.

Should I turn my Canadian line off completely?

You can turn it off, but you may lose access to SMS verification codes and regular calls. For some travellers, that is fine. For others, it creates problems.

A better approach is often to leave the Canadian line on but disable data roaming for that line. Then use your travel eSIM for data. This gives you a balance between cost control and access to your Canadian number.

What if my phone asks for a default line?

When you install an eSIM, your phone may ask which line should be used for calls, messages, and data. Choose carefully.

A simple setup is:

• Default voice line: Canadian number, if you want people to see your normal number when you call.
• Cellular data line: travel eSIM.
• Data switching: off, unless you fully understand how it works.

Turning off automatic data switching can help prevent your phone from jumping back to your Canadian line for data.

Final recommendation

For most Canadian travellers, the best setup is to keep your Canadian number on the phone and use the travel eSIM for data. This gives you affordable connectivity while preserving access to important texts and account verification.

The key is to set the travel eSIM as your cellular data line and manage roaming settings on your Canadian line. If you do that, you can get the benefits of eSIM travel data without giving up your regular number.
