Does a Travel eSIM Include Calls and Texts? What Canadians Should Know

Many Canadian travellers hear about travel eSIMs and assume they work exactly like a regular phone plan. Sometimes they do, but many travel eSIMs are designed for mobile data only.

That means the eSIM gives your phone internet access abroad, but it may not include a local phone number, traditional voice calls, or SMS text messaging. For most travellers, that is still enough. Apps like WhatsApp, iMessage, FaceTime, Messenger, Gmail, Google Maps, Uber, and airline apps all work over data.

The key is understanding the difference before you buy. If you expect your eSIM to replace your Canadian phone number completely, you may be disappointed. If you understand that it is mainly for data, it can be one of the easiest ways to stay connected while avoiding roaming costs.

The short answer

Many travel eSIMs are data-only. They are meant to provide internet access in your destination. You use that internet connection for messaging, calling, maps, browsing, email, and travel apps.

Some eSIM providers offer plans with calls and texts, but you should never assume. Always check the plan details before purchase.

For most Canadian vacation travellers, data-only is perfectly fine. Most communication now happens through apps, not traditional phone calls.

What does data-only mean?

Data-only means the eSIM provides mobile internet. It does not necessarily provide a phone number.

With a data-only eSIM, you can usually:

• Use Google Maps or Apple Maps.
• Send WhatsApp messages.
• Use iMessage and FaceTime.
• Browse the web.
• Check email.
• Use Uber, Lyft, airline apps, hotel apps, and transit apps.
• Make app-based calls and video calls.
• Use social media.

You may not be able to make traditional cellular calls or send SMS from the eSIM itself. If you need those features, you may need carrier roaming, a local SIM with voice service, or a travel eSIM plan that specifically includes calls and texts.

Can I call people with a data-only eSIM?

Yes, but through apps. WhatsApp calling, FaceTime Audio, Messenger calls, Instagram calls, Teams, Zoom, and similar services use mobile data. They do not require a traditional phone line from the eSIM.

This works well if the people you contact also use those apps. It is less ideal if you need to call a restaurant, hotel, tour operator, or local business that only accepts regular phone calls.

For occasional local calls, many travellers use hotel phones, app-based calling, or their Canadian line when necessary. Just remember that using your Canadian number abroad may trigger roaming charges.

Can I receive SMS verification codes?

A data-only travel eSIM does not usually receive SMS messages on its own. However, you may still receive SMS on your Canadian number if your Canadian SIM remains active in the phone.

This is why many travellers use a dual SIM setup. The travel eSIM handles mobile data, while the Canadian SIM remains available for important texts.

Before relying on this, check your carrier's roaming rules. Receiving SMS may be treated differently from sending SMS or using data, but policies vary.

For important accounts, set up backup verification methods before your trip. Use an authenticator app, email backup, or trusted device whenever possible.

Will iMessage still work?

Yes, iMessage can work over mobile data. If your iMessage is connected to your Apple ID email address, it can continue working through your travel eSIM connection.

If you want iMessage to stay connected to your Canadian phone number, keep your Canadian line active and do not remove the SIM. Before travelling, check Settings > Messages > Send & Receive and confirm your Apple ID email is enabled too.

This gives you a backup if phone-number-based iMessage has trouble abroad.

Will WhatsApp still work with my Canadian number?

Yes. WhatsApp should continue working with your existing Canadian number after you install a travel eSIM. Do not change your WhatsApp number unless you are intentionally moving your account.

Once WhatsApp is already set up, it uses whichever internet connection your phone has. That can be Wi-Fi, your Canadian data plan, or your travel eSIM.

What if I need regular phone calls?

If you need regular phone calls, you have a few options:

• Use your Canadian carrier's roaming plan.
• Use your Canadian line only for occasional calls and accept the possible charge.
• Choose a travel plan that includes voice service, if available.
• Use app-based calls when possible.
• Use hotel, business, or local phone services for rare local calls.

For business travellers, traditional calling may matter more. For leisure travellers, app-based calling is usually enough.

What if I need to call emergency services?

Emergency calling rules depend on the country, device, and network. Do not rely on a data-only eSIM as your only emergency communication method without understanding local rules.

When travelling, know the local emergency number, keep your Canadian SIM available if possible, and make sure you have a way to contact your hotel, host, travel group, or local support.

Data-only eSIM vs roaming for calls and texts

Need	Data-only travel eSIM	Carrier roaming
Maps and browsing	Yes	Yes
WhatsApp and iMessage	Yes	Yes
Regular phone calls	Usually no	Usually yes
SMS from Canadian number	Through Canadian SIM, not the eSIM	Usually yes
Voicemail	Usually no	Usually yes
Cost control	Strong	Depends on carrier
Best for	App-based travel communication	Full phone-number access

Best setup for most Canadian travellers

For most travellers, the best setup is:

• Use a travel eSIM for mobile data.
• Keep your Canadian SIM active for important texts.
• Turn off data roaming on your Canadian line.
• Use WhatsApp, iMessage, FaceTime, Messenger, and email for daily communication.
• Only use regular calls or SMS when necessary.

This setup keeps your data costs more predictable while preserving access to your Canadian number when you need it.

Final recommendation

A travel eSIM does not always include calls and texts, and that is okay for many travellers. If your main need is data, a data-only eSIM is often the simplest and most affordable option.

If you need full calling, SMS, and voicemail from your Canadian number, roaming may still be useful. If you mostly use apps, a travel eSIM can do the job without the daily roaming fees.
