WhatsApp, iMessage, FaceTime & Google Maps with a Travel eSIM
TL;DR
Which travel apps work over eSIM data, including WhatsApp, iMessage, FaceTime, Google Maps, rideshare apps, and banking apps.
Yes. A travel eSIM gives your phone mobile data, and most of the apps travellers rely on work over data. That includes WhatsApp, iMessage, FaceTime, Google Maps, Apple Maps, Uber, Lyft, Gmail, Safari, Chrome, Instagram, Facebook Messenger, airline apps, hotel apps, and translation apps.
This is why data-only travel eSIMs are useful. Even if the eSIM does not include a traditional phone number, you can still use the apps that handle most travel communication and navigation.
The key is making sure your phone uses the travel eSIM for cellular data and that your important apps are set up before the trip.
Quick answer by app
| App or service | Works with travel eSIM data- | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Yes | Keep your existing account and number | |
| iMessage | Yes | Best with Apple ID email also enabled |
| FaceTime | Yes | Uses data or Wi-Fi |
| Google Maps | Yes | Download offline maps to save data |
| Apple Maps | Yes | Uses mobile data for routing and updates |
| Uber and Lyft | Yes | Useful right after landing |
| Gmail and Outlook | Yes | Attachments use more data |
| Instagram and TikTok | Yes | Video-heavy apps use data quickly |
| Banking apps | Usually yes | SMS verification may still need Canadian SIM |
| Regular SMS | Not usually through data-only eSIM | Use Canadian SIM or another method |
WhatsApp with a travel eSIM
WhatsApp works over internet data. Once your WhatsApp account is already set up, it does not need your Canadian SIM to provide the data connection.
That means you can keep your WhatsApp account connected to your Canadian number and use the travel eSIM for internet access. You can send messages, make voice calls, send photos, and use video calls as long as you have data.
Do not change your WhatsApp number just because you are travelling. For most people, the best approach is to keep the same account and simply use the eSIM as the data source.
iMessage with a travel eSIM
iMessage also works over data. If your iPhone has a travel eSIM data connection, iMessage can send blue-bubble messages through that connection.
Before travelling, check Settings > Messages > Send & Receive. Make sure your Apple ID email address is enabled in addition to your phone number. This gives people another way to reach you if your phone-number-based iMessage has any issues abroad.
If you want to keep iMessage tied to your Canadian number, keep your Canadian SIM active in the phone.
FaceTime with a travel eSIM
FaceTime works over mobile data or Wi-Fi. With a travel eSIM, you can make FaceTime video or audio calls if the connection is strong enough.
Video calls use more data than text messages or maps. If you have a small eSIM plan, use FaceTime Audio instead of video, keep calls shorter, or wait for Wi-Fi.
Google Maps and Apple Maps
Maps are one of the biggest reasons to get a travel eSIM. When you land, you may need directions, transit routes, walking navigation, restaurant searches, or hotel addresses.
Google Maps and Apple Maps both work with mobile data. To save data, download offline maps before leaving your hotel or before the trip. Offline maps can reduce data usage, but live transit updates, traffic, walking directions, and searches may still use data.
Uber, Lyft, and rideshare apps
Rideshare apps work with a travel eSIM as long as you have data. This is especially useful at airports, train stations, and unfamiliar areas where Wi-Fi may be unreliable.
Make sure your rideshare apps are already installed and logged in before the trip. If the app asks for SMS verification abroad, you may need access to your Canadian number.
Airline, hotel, and transit apps
Most travel apps work normally with eSIM data. This includes airline apps, hotel apps, ticket apps, train apps, museum apps, and event apps.
Before leaving Canada, install the important apps, log in, and download tickets or boarding passes where possible. That way, you are not trying to reset passwords while standing in an airport.
Banking apps and verification codes
Banking apps usually work over travel eSIM data, but verification can be the tricky part. If your bank sends SMS codes to your Canadian number, the travel eSIM itself may not receive those texts.
To prepare:
- Keep your Canadian SIM active if you may need SMS codes.
- Add an authenticator app where available.
- Enable email backup verification if offered.
- Log into banking apps before leaving Canada.
- Tell your bank about travel if needed.
This reduces the chance of being locked out.
Social media and video apps
Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, Snapchat, Facebook, and similar apps all work with travel eSIM data. The issue is data usage.
Short videos, reels, stories, uploads, and livestreams can use a lot of data. If you have a limited plan, save heavy posting, video streaming, and cloud uploads for Wi-Fi.
What does not work with a data-only eSIM?
A data-only eSIM usually does not give you traditional cellular voice calls or SMS from the eSIM line. It also does not replace your Canadian phone number.
If you need regular calls, SMS, or voicemail from your Canadian number, you may need to keep your Canadian SIM active, use carrier roaming selectively, or choose a plan that includes voice services.
Best settings for app use abroad
For a smooth trip:
- Set your travel eSIM as the cellular data line.
- Turn off data roaming on your Canadian line.
- Keep data roaming on for the eSIM if required.
- Disable automatic app updates on mobile data.
- Turn off cloud photo backup on mobile data.
- Download maps, playlists, and tickets on Wi-Fi.
- Keep important apps logged in before leaving Canada.
Final recommendation
A travel eSIM works well with the apps most travellers use every day. WhatsApp, iMessage, FaceTime, Google Maps, rideshare apps, email, social media, and travel apps can all work over the eSIM's mobile data.
The main limitation is traditional phone service. If you need regular calls and SMS, plan for that separately. If you mostly use apps, a travel eSIM is usually enough.
