Travel eSIM Installed but No Internet? iPhone and Android Fixes

If your travel eSIM is installed but has no internet, the phone is usually using the wrong line for data, data roaming is off on the travel eSIM when the plan needs it, or the plan has not started in a covered country. Set the travel eSIM as your mobile data line, turn on data roaming for that line only if the plan instructions say so, and restart the phone. If it still does not connect, check the APN and network settings in your plan instructions.

Your travel eSIM can be installed correctly and still fail to provide internet access. Usually, the profile is on the phone, but the phone is using the wrong SIM for data, the eSIM needs roaming enabled, the plan is not active in that destination, or an APN or network setting needs attention.

This guide is for the specific situation where the eSIM is already installed but apps, websites, maps, or messages will not load over mobile data. If the phone says No Service, use the separate eSIM no service diagnostic checklist first.

Quick answer

Start with these checks, in order:

• Turn off Wi-Fi and confirm the travel eSIM line is turned on.
• Select the travel eSIM as the phone's mobile data line.
• Turn off automatic data switching.
• Enable data roaming on the travel eSIM only if the plan instructions require it.
• Confirm you are in a covered country and the plan has started, has data remaining, and has not expired.
• Restart the phone, then try a supported network or the APN supplied by the eSIM provider.

The exact setting names vary by iPhone model, iOS version, Android brand, and provider. Do not copy an APN or network name from another eSIM guide unless it matches your plan instructions.

First, confirm what is actually failing

With Wi-Fi turned off, look at the status bar and test a simple website in a browser.

There are three different problems that are often described as “no internet”:

1. The phone has no service at all. This is a network registration problem. Use the No Service checklist.
2. The phone shows signal, but websites and every app fail. This is usually a data-line, roaming, APN, network, or plan-status problem.
3. A few apps fail while others work. This may be an app permission, VPN, private DNS, data saver, or app-specific setting.

Identifying the symptom keeps you from changing settings that are unrelated to the problem.

Fix an installed eSIM with no internet on iPhone

1. Choose the travel eSIM for cellular data

Open Settings > Cellular or Settings > Mobile Data. Confirm the travel eSIM is listed and that Turn On This Line is enabled.

Then open Cellular Data and choose the travel eSIM. A plan can appear in the list without being the active data line, so installing it is not enough by itself.

If you see Allow Cellular Data Switching, turn it off while troubleshooting. Automatic switching can move data back to your Canadian line, especially when the travel line has a weak connection. It can also create roaming risk.

2. Check data roaming for the correct line

Open the travel eSIM under Cellular and look for Cellular Data Options. Some travel eSIMs use partner networks abroad and require Data Roaming to be on for that eSIM line.

That setting is separate for each line. If your goal is to avoid Canadian roaming, keep data roaming off on your Canadian line. Follow the plan's instructions if they say roaming must remain off for the travel eSIM; providers do not all use the same network model.

3. Check the APN only when the provider gives you one

If the eSIM has signal but no data, open the travel eSIM settings and look for Cellular Data Network or Mobile Data Network. Many plans fill the APN automatically. Others provide an APN in the installation email or support instructions.

If an APN is supplied, enter it exactly as written. Do not add a username, password, proxy, or other field unless the provider gives you those values. If the APN menu is missing or locked, contact the provider rather than guessing.

4. Refresh the mobile connection

Turn Airplane Mode on for about 30 seconds, turn it off, and wait for the phone to reconnect. If data still does not work, restart the iPhone.

If the plan supports more than one local network, go to the travel eSIM's network selection settings and try automatic selection first. If automatic selection fails, turn it off and choose a supported network named in the provider's instructions. A network that appears in the list is not automatically a network your plan can use.

Fix an installed eSIM with no internet on Android

Android menu names differ between Google Pixel, Samsung Galaxy, and other brands. The goal is to edit the travel eSIM's settings, not the Canadian SIM's settings.

1. Select the eSIM as the mobile data SIM

On Pixel, open Settings > Network & internet > SIMs. On Samsung, open Settings > Connections > SIM manager. Choose the travel eSIM, make sure it is enabled, and set it as the SIM for mobile data.

If your phone has a setting such as Data switching, Automatic data switching, or Switch mobile data automatically, turn it off while testing. Otherwise, Android may fall back to the Canadian line.

2. Check roaming and preferred network settings

Open the travel eSIM's mobile network settings. Turn roaming on only when the plan instructions require it. Keep roaming off for the Canadian SIM if you do not want that line to use Canadian carrier data abroad.

If the phone shows signal but data does not pass, leave network selection on automatic first. If that fails, turn automatic selection off and choose a supported network from the provider's list. You can also try the phone's recommended network type, such as 5G/LTE or LTE, if the provider says the plan supports it.

3. Verify the APN

On many Android phones, APN settings are under Mobile network > Access Point Names. Use only the APN supplied for this exact eSIM. Copy it carefully, save it, select the new APN, and restart the phone if Android asks you to.

If the APN cannot be edited, the provider may configure it remotely or the phone software may restrict the field. Contact the provider with the phone model and screenshots instead of installing a random APN from the internet.

If only some apps have no internet

If a browser works but one or two apps do not, the eSIM may be fine. Check the following:

• The app is allowed to use cellular data.
• Data Saver or Low Data Mode is not blocking the app.
• A VPN, private DNS, firewall, or security app is not filtering the connection.
• The app is updated and has permission to use location or mobile data where required.
• Automatic photo backup, app updates, and cloud sync are not consuming the plan in the background.

For maps and travel bookings, test the connection with Wi-Fi off before leaving the airport. This confirms that the travel line, not saved Wi-Fi, is providing the data.

Check the plan before resetting the phone

An installed eSIM cannot connect if the plan does not cover your current country or network. Check the order details and provider instructions for:

• Destination and regional coverage.
• Whether installation, first use, or connection to a local network starts validity.
• Remaining data and expiry date.
• Any supported-network or APN requirement.
• Whether the plan is data-only and therefore not intended for normal voice or SMS.

Activation and validity rules are provider-specific. Do not assume that installing the profile starts the plan, or that a plan installed in Canada will connect before you reach its covered destination.

When to contact the eSIM provider

Contact support if the eSIM still has no data after you have confirmed the data line, required roaming setting, coverage, network, and APN. If your plan is from Voyaio, use Voyaio Help & Support; for another eSIM, contact that provider. Include:

• Your phone model and operating-system version.
• Your current country and approximate location.
• The eSIM line name and whether it shows signal.
• Screenshots of the data-line and roaming settings.
• The exact error message, if any.
• Your order or activation reference.

Do not delete the eSIM while troubleshooting. Some providers cannot reinstall a profile after it is removed, and a failed reinstall can make it harder for support to identify the original activation.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my travel eSIM show signal but have no internet?

The most common causes are the wrong data line, required roaming being off on the travel eSIM, an APN mismatch, an unsupported network, or an inactive, expired, or exhausted plan.

Should I turn on roaming for my travel eSIM?

Only if the eSIM provider requires it. If it does, turn it on for the travel eSIM line, not your Canadian line.

Will resetting network settings fix an eSIM?

It can clear a corrupted network configuration, but it also removes saved Wi-Fi networks and other network settings. Try the less disruptive checks first, and save your eSIM instructions before using a reset.

Why does my eSIM work on Wi-Fi but not on mobile data?

Wi-Fi does not use your eSIM, so apps can work on Wi-Fi while the eSIM line still has a setting or plan problem. Turn off Wi-Fi, confirm the travel eSIM is your mobile data line, and check that the plan has started in a covered country.

Do I need to set an APN for my travel eSIM?

Usually not, because most phones set it automatically. If data still does not work after the basic checks, enter an APN only if your plan instructions list one, exactly as written.
