Travel eSIM vs Local SIM Card: Which Should You Use Abroad?

For years, one of the classic travel tips was to buy a local SIM card after landing. It was often cheaper than roaming and gave travellers access to a local mobile network. Today, travel eSIMs have changed that decision.

A travel eSIM lets you buy and install a mobile data plan before you arrive. A local SIM card usually requires visiting a kiosk, store, airport counter, convenience shop, or carrier location in your destination.

Both options can work. The right choice depends on your phone, trip length, destination, budget, and how much effort you want to spend after landing.

For most short and medium trips, a travel eSIM is usually easier. For very long stays, local SIM cards can still be useful, especially if you need a local phone number or the cheapest monthly plan.

For a single-country trip, compare the current Mexico eSIM plans or Thailand eSIM plans with a local SIM for the same trip length and data needs. Check the selected offer's data, validity, and coverage before deciding.

What is a travel eSIM?

A travel eSIM is a digital mobile plan for your destination. You buy it online, install it on a compatible phone, and use it for data while travelling. There is no plastic card and no need to remove your Canadian SIM.

The main benefits are convenience and speed. You can land with mobile data ready, open maps, message your hotel, order a ride, and avoid searching for a SIM store while tired or rushed.

Many travel eSIMs are data-only, so they are best for apps, maps, messaging, email, and browsing.

What is a local SIM card?

A local SIM card is a physical SIM purchased in the country you are visiting. You insert it into your phone and use a local carrier plan. Depending on the country and plan, it may include data, local calls, local texts, and sometimes a local phone number.

Local SIMs can be very affordable in some destinations. They are especially useful for long stays, students, digital nomads, and travellers who need a local number.

The tradeoff is friction. You may need to find a store, show ID, choose a plan in another language, wait in line, and physically swap SIM cards.

Quick comparison

Feature	Travel eSIM	Local SIM card
Setup	Online before travel	Usually after arrival
Physical card	No	Yes
Keeps Canadian SIM in phone	Yes	Sometimes no, unless dual SIM
Best for	Short and medium trips	Long stays or local-number needs
Convenience	Very high	Depends on destination
Local phone number	Usually no	Often yes
Cost	Predictable prepaid data	Can be cheaper for long stays
Airport readiness	Strong	Depends on kiosk availability
Language barriers	Lower	Possible

Convenience: eSIM wins for most travellers

The biggest advantage of a travel eSIM is convenience. You can buy it before your trip, install it on Wi-Fi, and have data ready when you land.

That matters because the first hour after arrival is often when you need data most. You may need to find your hotel, call a rideshare, check transit, message your host, or access a booking confirmation.

With a local SIM, you may need to find a store first. Airport SIM kiosks can be convenient, but they are not always the cheapest option. They may also be busy, closed, or hard to compare when you are tired from travel.

Cost: it depends on the trip length

Local SIM cards can be very cheap in some countries, especially for longer stays. If you are spending a month or more in one country, a local SIM may offer more data for the money.

For shorter trips, the difference is less clear. A travel eSIM may cost a little more than the cheapest local option, but it saves time and avoids the hassle of buying a SIM after arrival.

Think of it this way: a local SIM may be cheapest on paper. A travel eSIM may be better value when you include time, convenience, language barriers, and arrival-day stress.

Phone number: local SIM may win

If you need a local phone number, a local SIM card may be better. This can matter if you are booking local services, receiving local calls, setting up apps that require a local number, or staying for a long time.

Most travel eSIMs are focused on data, not local phone numbers. That is fine for travellers who use WhatsApp, iMessage, FaceTime, Messenger, email, and app-based services.

If local calling is important, check whether your eSIM plan includes voice or consider a local SIM.

Keeping your Canadian number

A travel eSIM makes it easier to keep your Canadian SIM in your phone. That can be helpful for SMS verification codes, iMessage, WhatsApp continuity, and occasional Canadian calls.

With a local physical SIM, you may need to remove your Canadian SIM if your phone only has one physical SIM slot. Some phones support dual SIM with one physical SIM and one eSIM, but the setup depends on the device.

If keeping your Canadian number available matters, a travel eSIM is often the cleaner choice.

Security and account access

Travellers often forget how many accounts are connected to their phone number. Banking, email, work apps, booking platforms, and government accounts may send verification codes by SMS.

If you remove your Canadian SIM and replace it with a local SIM, you may make those codes harder to receive. A travel eSIM lets you keep your Canadian SIM in the phone while using the eSIM for data.

That does not eliminate all roaming risk, but it gives you more control.

Multi-country travel

For a Portugal-only itinerary, compare a Portugal eSIM with a Europe regional eSIM and check the selected offer's current price and coverage. If your trip crosses France, Italy, Spain, and Portugal, verify that the regional plan covers every stop rather than assuming its name guarantees coverage.

A regional eSIM can cover several countries under one plan. That makes it better for cruises, backpacking, tours, rail trips, and multi-city vacations.

Local SIM cards can still work, but you need to confirm roaming rules between countries.

When a local SIM card makes sense

Choose a local SIM card if:

• You are staying in one country for a month or longer.
• You need a local phone number.
• You want the cheapest possible large data plan.
• Your phone does not support eSIM.
• You are comfortable buying a plan after arrival.
• You speak the local language or have help setting it up.

For long stays, a local SIM can still be a strong option.

When a travel eSIM makes sense

Choose a travel eSIM if:

• You want data ready when you land.
• You want to avoid airport SIM kiosks.
• You are travelling for a few days to a few weeks.
• You are visiting multiple countries.
• You want to keep your Canadian SIM in your phone.
• You mostly use data-based apps.
• You prefer paying in advance.

For most vacation travellers, this is the easier path.

Final recommendation

For Canadian travellers, a travel eSIM is usually the better choice for short and medium trips because it is faster, simpler, and easier to manage before departure. A local SIM card can still be better for long stays, local phone numbers, or very large data needs in one country.

If you want to land connected, use maps immediately, and keep your Canadian number available, choose a travel eSIM. If you are settling into one country for a month or more, compare local SIM options too.

Frequently asked questions

Is a travel eSIM cheaper than a local SIM?

Not always. Local SIMs can be cheaper for long stays, but travel eSIMs are often more convenient and predictable for shorter trips.

Can I keep my Canadian SIM with a travel eSIM?

Yes, on compatible dual SIM phones. This is one of the main advantages.

Does a local SIM give me a local number?

Is a travel eSIM better for Europe?

Often yes, especially for multi-country trips. A regional Europe eSIM can be easier than buying several local SIMs.

What if my phone does not support eSIM?

Then a local physical SIM or carrier roaming plan may be your main option.
