What Happens If You Run Out of eSIM Data While Travelling?

Quick answer

If you run out of eSIM data while travelling, your mobile data will usually slow down, stop working, or require a top-up depending on the plan. Your phone itself will still work, and you can still connect to Wi-Fi. If your Canadian SIM is still active, be careful: your phone may try to use your Canadian carrier data if automatic switching or roaming is enabled. To avoid roaming charges, keep your Canadian line from taking over data and buy more travel data if needed.

Running out of data is one of the most common worries travellers have when buying an eSIM. It can feel stressful because data is tied to practical moments: maps, ride-share apps, hotel bookings, translation, flight changes, restaurant searches, and messaging. The good news is that running out does not damage your phone or cancel your trip. It simply means the plan has reached its limit or fair use threshold.

What happens next depends on the type of eSIM you purchased. A fixed data plan may stop when the data is used. An unlimited plan may reduce speed after a daily high-speed allowance. Some providers let you top up the same eSIM. Others require buying a new plan and installing another eSIM. This guide explains what to expect and how to avoid getting stuck without data abroad.

How to tell if you ran out of data

The first sign is usually that mobile internet stops loading. Maps may not refresh, websites may time out, messages may stay unsent, or ride-share apps may show connection errors. Sometimes the phone still shows bars or 4G/5G, which can be confusing. Signal bars only mean the phone can see a network. They do not guarantee that your plan still has usable data.

You may also receive a usage notification from your eSIM provider, depending on the plan and platform. Some plans include a dashboard or email updates. Others require you to check usage manually. Your phone may also show data usage in its settings, but phone-level usage and provider-level usage may not match perfectly. Still, phone settings are useful for spotting whether a specific app used more data than expected.

If you have an unlimited plan and the connection becomes very slow, you may have reached a fair use threshold rather than fully running out. In that case, basic messaging may still work, but maps, images, video, and app downloads may be painfully slow until the allowance resets or the network restores speed.

What happens on a fixed data eSIM

On a fixed data eSIM, you buy a set amount of data. Once that amount is used, the plan usually stops providing mobile data. Your eSIM may still appear installed. It may still show a network name. But internet access may not work until you add more data or install a new plan.

This is similar to running out of prepaid mobile data. The phone is fine, the eSIM profile may still be there, and Wi-Fi still works. You have simply used the data allowance you purchased.

Some plans support top-ups. A top-up lets you add more data to the existing plan without reinstalling everything. Other plans do not support top-ups, which means you need to buy a new eSIM plan. This is not usually difficult, but you will need an internet connection to complete the purchase and receive the new instructions. Hotel Wi-Fi, airport Wi-Fi, cafe Wi-Fi, or a travel companion's hotspot can help.

What happens on an unlimited eSIM

Unlimited eSIM plans vary. Some continue working for the full validity period but reduce speed after heavy use. Others may have a daily high-speed allowance and reset the next day. Some may limit hotspot or certain high-data activities.

If your unlimited plan slows down, check whether the plan has a fair use policy. Reduced speed can still be useful for messaging, email, and basic maps, but it may not be enough for video calls, streaming, large uploads, or laptop hotspot. If you need faster data urgently, you may decide to buy an additional fixed data eSIM as a backup.

Unlimited plans are convenient, but they are not a reason to ignore usage completely. If you stream video, use hotspot, back up photos, and take video calls, you can hit fair use thresholds faster than expected.

Will your phone switch to your Canadian SIM?

It can, depending on your settings. This is the situation you want to avoid. If your travel eSIM runs out and your phone is allowed to use cellular data switching, backup data, or roaming on your Canadian SIM, it may try to reconnect using the Canadian line. That can trigger roaming fees.

Before travelling, set your travel eSIM as the only mobile data line and turn off data roaming for your Canadian SIM. On iPhone, also turn off Cellular Data Switching. On Android, turn off automatic SIM switching or backup calling features that could use the wrong line. If your eSIM runs out, you want the phone to stop using mobile data rather than quietly switching to roaming.

If you are not sure, turn off your Canadian SIM temporarily or keep airplane mode on while you troubleshoot over Wi-Fi. It is better to pause and check than to accidentally create a roaming charge.

Can you top up your eSIM?

Sometimes. Top-up availability depends on the eSIM provider, destination, and plan type. Some plans are built to be topped up from the provider's website or app. Others are one-time prepaid packages. If top-up matters to you, check before buying.

When top-up is available, it is usually the easiest option because you do not need to install a new eSIM profile. You add more data, wait for the plan to update, and continue using the same line. You may need to restart your phone or toggle airplane mode if the connection does not refresh right away.

When top-up is not available, you can usually buy another eSIM plan for the same destination. This may require scanning a new QR code or using manual installation details. If your phone already has several eSIM profiles stored, you may need to label them clearly or delete old expired plans to avoid confusion.

How to buy more data while abroad

If your data is already gone, connect to Wi-Fi first. Use hotel Wi-Fi, airport Wi-Fi, cafe Wi-Fi, train Wi-Fi, or a trusted connection from someone you are travelling with. Avoid entering payment details on unsecured public Wi-Fi if you are not comfortable with the network. A VPN can add privacy on public Wi-Fi, but the simplest option is often your hotel or a known cafe.

Once online, check whether your provider offers a top-up. If not, buy a new plan for the same destination or region. Make sure the new plan covers your country, has enough validity left for your trip, and is compatible with your phone. Install it carefully and set it as the mobile data line.

After activation, test a website or map app before leaving the Wi-Fi area. This helps confirm that your new data plan is working.

What if you are in the middle of using maps?

If you run out of data while navigating, do not panic. Your phone's GPS can still work without mobile data, but maps may not load new information, traffic, rerouting, or search results. If the route was already loaded, it may continue for a while. If you need a new route, find Wi-Fi or ask someone nearby for help.

This is why offline maps are useful. Download offline areas before your trip, especially if you are road tripping, hiking, driving between cities, or visiting rural areas. Offline maps do not replace everything, but they can keep you oriented when data is weak or unavailable.

How to avoid running out of data

Estimate your needs before buying. A traveller who only uses maps and messaging needs far less data than someone uploading videos, streaming, and using hotspot. Trip length matters too. A small plan might be fine for three days but not for three weeks.

Download before you go. Save maps, playlists, podcasts, shows, travel documents, and tickets on Wi-Fi. Set app updates to Wi-Fi only. Turn off cloud photo backup over cellular. Disable auto-play videos in social apps. Use hotel Wi-Fi for heavy tasks.

Check usage every couple of days. If you notice data disappearing quickly, adjust early. The worst time to discover heavy usage is the final day when you need maps to get to the airport.

Apps that use more data than people expect

Video apps are obvious data users, but they are not the only ones. Social apps can use a lot of data because videos auto-play and images load constantly. Cloud photo apps can upload large files in the background. Messaging apps can download videos and photos from group chats. Navigation apps can use data for live traffic, transit updates, and searches. Work apps can sync files, messages, and attachments.

Laptop hotspot is another major source. A laptop may download updates, sync cloud folders, refresh browser tabs, and load heavier websites. If your eSIM data is limited, use hotspot only when necessary.

Should you choose unlimited to avoid this problem?

Unlimited can reduce the chance of hitting a hard data limit, but it does not remove every limitation. Many unlimited plans have fair use policies or reduced speeds after heavy usage. For some travellers, that is perfectly fine. For others, especially remote workers, the reduced speed may be a problem.

A larger fixed data plan can sometimes be more predictable than a cheap unlimited plan with unclear speed rules. The best choice is not always the plan with the biggest headline. It is the plan with the right combination of data, validity, coverage, hotspot rules, and speed expectations.

Frequently asked questions

Will my eSIM disappear if I run out of data?

No. The eSIM profile usually stays on your phone. The data plan may be empty or expired, but the installed profile does not simply vanish.

Can I still use Wi-Fi after my eSIM data runs out?

Yes. Wi-Fi works separately from mobile data. You can use Wi-Fi to message, browse, buy a top-up, or install a new plan.

Will I be charged automatically if I run out?

A prepaid travel eSIM usually stops or slows rather than charging you automatically. However, your Canadian SIM could create roaming charges if your phone switches to it. Keep your settings locked down.

Should I delete an eSIM after it runs out?

You can delete old or expired eSIMs to keep your settings clean, but do not delete an active eSIM you may need to top up unless the provider instructs you to.

Bottom line

Running out of eSIM data is inconvenient, but manageable. Your phone still works, Wi-Fi still works, and you may be able to top up or buy another plan. The biggest risk is not the eSIM running out. It is your phone switching back to Canadian roaming data without you noticing. Set your travel eSIM as the data line, turn off roaming on your Canadian SIM, monitor usage, and buy enough data for the way you actually travel.
