How should I estimate data for a trip between Reykjavík and Akureyri?

For a route linking Reykjavík, Akureyri and Vík, consider trip length and how often you will check maps or update bookings. Estimate from your own use of maps, messaging, social uploads and Wi-Fi; video, hotspot use and photo backup can increase demand. The ranges on this page are seven-day examples, not a prediction for your trip.

Use Reykjavík as more than a launch point

Allow time for the capital's food, museums and harbour before heading out on a long drive.

Choose a route you can drive comfortably

The Golden Circle and South Coast are not interchangeable day trips; base the plan on daylight, road conditions and overnight stops.

Check conditions before remote legs

Weather and road access can change quickly. Consult official local updates and keep offline directions for areas with limited service.

Iceland data planning

How much data might your Iceland trip use?

The examples below describe different trip patterns and the assumptions behind each estimate. Your actual use depends on your apps, settings, trip length and access to Wi-Fi.

Seven-day light-use calculator example

3.6–5.5 GB

Assumes: Seven days of messaging, email, browsing and occasional maps, with streaming and video calls off, light social use and few photo uploads. Wi-Fi availability is not included in this activity estimate and may reduce mobile data used.

Seven-day typical-use calculator example

10.1–15.1 GB

Assumes: Seven days with light streaming and video calls, daily maps, moderate social use and photo uploads. Wi-Fi access is not modelled and may reduce mobile data used; hotspot, higher-resolution video and app updates can raise demand.

These are rough planning examples, not plan allowances or promises. Actual data use varies with apps, settings, trip length and Wi-Fi. Compare estimates with the live plan options above.
